The Four Vedas

(Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vedas) The Vedas (véda, "knowledge") are a large corpus of texts that form the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature and the oldest texts of Sanathana Dharma. They are classified into:
  1. The Rig Veda, containing hymns to be recited by the hotr or reciting priest;
  2. The Yajur Veda, containing formulas to be recited by the adhvaryu or officiating priest;
  3. The Sama Veda, containing formulas to be sung by the udgatr or chanting priest.
  4. The Atharva Veda, a collection of mathematical and scientific formulae, masqueraded as magical spells and healing or apotropaic charms and some hymns used by the Brahmán priest
